Post-Storm Pool Recovery

Get your pool back to perfect condition after severe weather

Portugal experiences Atlantic storms, particularly from October through March, that can wreak havoc on pools. Heavy rain dilutes chemicals, wind blows in debris and contaminants, and power outages stop filtration. Quick action after a storm prevents lasting damage and gets your pool back to swimming condition fast.

For All Pool Owners

Why Quick Recovery Matters

Storm damage compounds rapidly. Diluted chemicals allow bacteria to multiply, debris decomposes and stains surfaces, and waterlogged equipment can fail. Starting recovery within 24 hours of a storm ending prevents most secondary damage.

Post-Storm Recovery Checklist

Follow these steps as soon as it's safe to access your pool after a storm:

  1. 1
Remove large debris — branches, leaves, and foreign objects from the pool and deck
  2. 2
Check and empty skimmer and pump baskets — they may be packed full
  3. 3
Inspect all equipment for damage — pump, filter, heater, salt system, electrical connections
  4. 4
Test water chemistry — rain drastically lowers pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels
  5. 5
Shock treat the pool with 3-4x the normal dose to kill storm-introduced bacteria
  6. 6
Run the pump continuously for 24-48 hours until water clears
  7. 7
Backwash the filter after 12 hours of running — it will collect a lot of debris
  8. 8
Retest chemistry after 24 hours and fine-tune pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer
  9. 9
Inspect the pool deck and coping for cracks, lifted pavers, or trip hazards caused by the storm
  10. 10
Check the pool fence and gate for storm damage — ensure latches and hinges are functional
  11. 11
Remove waterlogged items from the pool area — furniture cushions, covers, toys
  12. 12
Inspect electrical junction boxes and GFCI/RCD breakers for water ingress before powering on
  13. 13
Clean the salt cell if you have a saltwater system — storm debris can cause scale buildup
  14. 14
Document all damage with photos for insurance claims — contact your insurer promptly

Storm Recovery in Portugal

Portugal's Atlantic coast is exposed to winter storms that can bring heavy rain, strong winds, and occasionally flooding. The Silver Coast (Peniche, Nazaré) and Lisbon coast are most affected. After major storms, our emergency response team can prioritize pool recovery — contact us for same-day or next-day service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can storm water damage my pool?

Yes. Heavy rain dilutes chemicals to unsafe levels, introduces bacteria and contaminants, and can cause flooding that damages equipment. Wind-blown debris can scratch surfaces and clog systems. Lightning strikes can damage electrical equipment.

Should I drain storm water from my pool?

Only if the water level is dangerously high (above the coping). Otherwise, it's better to treat the existing water than to drain and refill. Use the pump's waste setting to lower the level if needed.

How long until I can swim after a storm?

After completing recovery steps, wait until chlorine returns to 1-3ppm and the water is visibly clear — typically 24-48 hours. Test bacteria levels if the storm was severe or flooding occurred.

My pool equipment was submerged — is it ruined?

Not necessarily, but it needs immediate attention. Turn off all power, let equipment dry completely, and have an electrician check before restarting. Pumps and heaters can often be saved if dried and serviced quickly.

Should I cover my pool before a storm?

Remove loose covers that could be damaged by wind. Solid safety covers can stay on. Turn off electrical equipment, secure loose items around the pool, and raise the chlorine level before the storm arrives.
